The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained businessman and socialite, Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, ahead of his arraignment before the Federal High Court in Lagos.

Cubana Chief Priest is facing charges related to the abuse of the Nigerian currency, the Naira. The EFCC alleges that he sprayed and tampered with the currency at a social event, which is in violation of the Central Bank Act of 2007.

The spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the detention and stated that Cubana Chief Priest would be arraigned before Justice Kehinde Ogundare on three counts. The charges include tampering with funds in the denomination of N500 notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria during a social event at Eko Hotel in February 2024. The EFCC also alleges that he engaged in similar actions during a social event in Lagos in 2020.

This recent development comes after the EFCC secured the conviction of popular cross-dresser, Bobrisky, on similar charges.

The EFCC has been investigating several celebrities for alleged abuse of the Naira, and many have made statements to the commission or have been invited for questioning. The EFCC has clarified that it will focus on investigating and prosecuting new cases of Naira abuse, while overlooking old videos. The commission emphasizes its commitment to upholding the sanctity of the national currency and warns the public against engaging in such acts.

EFCC’s Efforts Against Naira Abuse

The EFCC has been actively addressing the issue of Naira abuse and the dollarization of the economy. Its special task force against Naira abuse and dollarization began operations in February 2024. The commission appreciates the public’s engagement in combating Naira abuse and assures that it will continue to investigate and prosecute individuals involved in such acts.

While the EFCC acknowledges the existence of old videos depicting Naira abuse, it will prioritize new cases. The commission urges the public to be cautious and comply with laws against Naira abuse.

The EFCC remains committed to maintaining the integrity of the Nigerian currency and encourages collaborative efforts to sustain this objective.
