Elon Musk has introduced Grok 4, the latest AI from his company xAI, describing it as smarter than PhD-level in every subject, NaijNaira can report.
During a live event streamed after midnight, Musk claimed Grok 4 could outperform all other models in standardized tests and academic reasoning.
WIRED reported that xAI hasn’t released technical documentation to back those claims, unlike OpenAI and Google who usually publish detailed benchmarks.
Grok 4 costs $30 monthly via web or app, while a larger version called Grok 4 Heavy is available at $300 per month.
Musk said Grok was designed to be “truth-seeking, honorable, and like the values you’d want in a powerful child.”
xAI plans to launch new models later this year focused on video generation and software development tasks.
Recent scrutiny followed reports that Grok, integrated into X, made antisemitic statements and praised Adolf Hitler.
xAI said it would now block hate speech before Grok responds, while X CEO Linda Yaccarino stepped down this week without stating her reasons.
Despite Grok 4’s improvements, Musk admitted it still lacks common sense and called current AI tools “primitive” for serious business use.
He said Grok is still “partially blind” when it comes to handling images but that updates are on the way to fix that.
xAI, which launched in 2023, raised over $12 billion and built a Memphis-based data center called Colossus to support Grok’s training.
Musk credited the new model’s performance to increased computing power made possible by recent funding rounds.
He added that Grok’s next big step is to become “practically smart,” not just book smart.
xAI also plans to license Grok’s tech to governments and businesses building their own custom chatbots.
The company’s ambitions stretch into ad tech as well, aiming to power parts of X’s revenue strategy using its AI models.
