John Ogu, former Super Eagles midfielder, is close to finalizing a deal with Rivers United after spending over a decade playing in Europe, NaijNaira can report.

The 36-year-old is set to return to Nigerian football after spells in Slovenia, Portugal, Spain, and Israel.

Ogu began his career in Nigeria with Akwa Starlets, Akwa United, and Flying Sports Academy before heading to Europe in 2006.

He joined Slovenian side Drava Ptuj, where he scored eight goals in 97 appearances during a four-year stint.

He later moved to Portugal’s Atlético Clube de Portugal and had brief spells at Almería B and União de Leiria.

Ogu became a household name at Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Israel, where he won multiple league titles and enjoyed his most consistent club run.

“I’ve always wanted to come back and contribute to the game here,” Ogu once said during an interview.

He earned 26 caps for Nigeria, made his debut in a 2014 World Cup qualifier against Kenya, and scored his first international goal against Mexico in 2013.

He featured in Nigeria’s 2013 Confederations Cup squad and helped secure third place at the 2019 AFCON.

Rivers United could gain vital experience and depth as they prepare for the CAF Confederation Cup and the upcoming NPFL season.
