The Union of European Footballing Associations (UEFA) has recently announced significant changes to the format of the UEFA Champions League, set to be implemented from the 2024-2025 season onwards.
In a video released by UEFA, the modifications to the competition format were detailed.
One of the major changes is the replacement of the current 32-team group stage with a singular 36-team league phase.
This format will also be applied to the Europa League and the newly introduced Europa Conference League.
Each team will be drawn against eight different opponents, with two teams from each of the four seeding pots. They will play four games at home and four away.
The top eight teams from the league phase will directly qualify for the Round of 16.
However, teams finishing ninth through 24th will have to face each other in a knockout playoff round to join the top eight teams in the pre-quarterfinals.
On the other hand, teams that finish 25th to 36th will be eliminated directly from all competitions.
This eliminates the previous system where third-placed group finishers dropped down to the lower European league’s preliminary playoff round.
As the 2024-2025 season approaches, football fans around the world eagerly await the implementation of this new format, which promises to bring even more drama and excitement to Europe’s premier club competition.
