Former Barcelona winger Emmanuel Amunike is reportedly the frontrunner for the head coach position of the Super Eagles, according to soccernet.ng.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has allegedly chosen Amunike as the substantive head coach of the national team, with an official announcement expected soon. The NFF has been given a two-week deadline by the sports ministry to name a successor to Jose Peseiro.
If the reports are true, this role will be the biggest challenge for Amunike. While he excelled as the coach of the Golden Eaglets, leading the Nigeria U17 national team to win the FIFA U17 World Cup, his records with Misr Lel Makkasa in Egypt and Zanaco in Zambia were less impressive.
Amunike also struggled as the head coach of the Flying Eagles, failing to help the Nigeria U20 team qualify for the AFCON in 2017.
However, Amunike’s success as the head coach of the Tanzanian national team cannot be overlooked.
He guided the Taifa Stars to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, their first appearance in the tournament in nearly forty years.
It is believed that George Finidi, the manager of Enyimba FC, will continue in his role as one of the assistants to the new Super Eagles head coach, a position he held under Peseiro with distinction.
Only time will tell if he can successfully go through the challenges that lie ahead and lead the team to further success.
