The first group of Nigerians fleeing the crisis in Sudan has arrived in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, with the help of the government’s evacuation exercise.
The group, consisting of 274 individuals, was transported by Air Peace, an airline that flew them from Aswan in Egypt to Abuja.
Despite some logistical and diplomatic challenges, the evacuation began last Wednesday and is expected to benefit a total of 5,500 Nigerians.
The evacuees were first transported by bus from Sudan to Egypt before being airlifted to Nigeria.
According to Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), no Nigerian has been left behind in Khartoum.
