Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will take on Colombia, Saudi Arabia, and Norway in Group F of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2025, as confirmed during Thursday’s official draw in Santiago, Chile. The draw event, conducted by FIFA’s Jaime Yarza and hosted by Chilean TV presenter Javiera Naranjo, was covered live, according to report.
The tournament is scheduled to run from September 27 to October 19, with matches set to be played in four cities — Santiago, Rancagua, Valparaíso, and Talca.
This marks the second time Chile will host the youth competition, the first being in 1987 when Yugoslavia edged out West Germany in a dramatic penalty shootout final.
Tough test ahead for Nigeria’s Flying Eagles
Nigeria is one of four African nations participating in the global youth competition, alongside South Africa (Group E), Morocco (Group C), and Egypt (Group A). The Nigeria U20 team, currently holding the WAFU B title, will be aiming to build on their third-place finish at the 2023 Africa U20 Cup of Nations.
Head coach Aliyu Zubairu’s squad is faced with a tough group in what promises to be a highly competitive tournament. Colombia are known for their aggressive and technical approach. Norway bring European tactical structure, while Saudi Arabia’s speed and resilience make them dangerous opponents.
“This is another golden opportunity for the team to finally win our first title at this level,” said a team insider following the draw.
Long road to a maiden title
The Nigeria Flying Eagles have reached the final of the U-20 World Cup twice — in 1989, losing to Portugal, and in 2005, falling to a Lionel Messi-led Argentina. Expectations remain high, as fans hope this new generation can finally bring the trophy home.
The Flying Eagles begin their journey in Group F, a challenging lineup that will test the depth and character of the squad.
