Football club owner found guilty of multi-million pound fraud

Andy Pilley, the chairman and owner of Fleetwood Town football club, has been found guilty of a multi-million pound fraud involving mis-sold energy contracts.

Pilley, along with his sister and two others, operated a telesales operation that targeted small businesses and charities, conning them into signing long-term energy contracts between 2014 and 2016.

The fraud involved false or misleading statements about the length and price of the contracts, as well as competitor rates.

Pilley and his fellow fraudsters controlled a web of interconnected companies that misled innocent small businesses across the UK.

Pilley has been remanded in custody and faces sentencing in July.

The National Trading Standards called the fraud a “victimless crime” and stated that many legitimate businesses in the energy market lost out by missing out on energy contracts that were diverted to Pilley’s companies.
