Former Leeds United defender Sol Bamba has tragically passed away at the age of 39.
Bamba recently became the manager of Turkish 1.Lig club Adanaspor.
He fell ill before his team’s match against Manisa BBSK on Friday and sadly died in hospital, as confirmed by the club.
Adanaspor released a statement on Saturday evening, saying: “Our technical director Souleymane Bamba, who fell ill before the Manisa Football Club match played yesterday, was taken to Manisa Celal Bayar University Hospital and unfortunately lost his battle for life there. Our condolences to his family and our community.”
Bamba’s football career spanned 18 years, during which he played for several notable clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, Leicester City, Leeds United, and Cardiff City.
He joined Leeds in January 2015, initially on loan from Palermo, and quickly became a fan favorite.
After less than a month, he was handed the captain’s armband, and his loan move was made permanent that summer.
Bamba made 56 appearances for Leeds, scoring five goals.
In 2016, Bamba joined Cardiff City, where he became a beloved figure among supporters.
He played a crucial role in Cardiff’s promotion to the Premier League in his debut season and made 112 appearances, scoring 10 goals over five years.
After retiring as a player, Bamba returned to Cardiff as an assistant coach in 2023 before earning his coaching badges in Wales and taking on his first managerial role at Adanaspor.
