Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka is set to return to Brentford after spending the 2024-2025 season on loan at Bundesliga club Augsburg. The 27-year-old impressed during his time in Germany, but despite his strong performances, Augsburg has decided not to make the move permanent.
According to report, Onyeka helped Augsburg to a 12th-place finish in the Bundesliga with one assist in 31 appearances.
Although Onyeka has not been a key attacking force, his work rate and defensive contributions were notable throughout the season. His performance was a breath of fresh air for Augsburg, but they won’t be extending his stay.
As the Bundesliga season wrapped up, Onyeka was among the players recognized for their contributions as the club said its goodbyes.
Now back at Brentford, Onyeka has two years left on his contract with the Premier League club. The midfielder’s future with the Bees remains uncertain, though, as they could potentially lose some key players during the summer transfer window.
It’s possible Onyeka could be called upon more next season, especially as the club looks to strengthen its squad.
“He is a hard worker in the middle of the park and offers a lot defensively,” a statement about Onyeka’s impact at Augsburg said, highlighting his key role despite limited attacking contributions.
The Super Eagles star will now await his role at Brentford as they prepare for the upcoming season.
While it’s unclear how Thomas Frank will utilize him, Onyeka’s return could provide an opportunity for more game time, depending on how the squad reshapes during the summer.
