Manchester United’s longstanding interest in Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has received a boost, as reports suggest that Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is no longer interested in signing him.

De Jong, who is also attracting interest from Bayern Munich, could be among the top stars Barcelona offloads this summer due to their financial struggles.

Despite making 29 appearances for Barcelona this season, de Jong has garnered plenty of interest in his services. PSG and Bayern Munich have been identified as huge admirers of the Dutchman.

However, PSG has reportedly abandoned the idea of signing de Jong this summer due to their financial situation and the need to comply with UEFA’s financial fair play rules. Instead, PSG is focused on signing Napoli star Victor Osimhen to replace Kylian Mbappe, who is expected to depart.

With PSG out of the race, Bayern Munich has now emerged as a potential option for de Jong as they look to rebuild after missing out on the Bundesliga title.

Manchester United, who have held a longstanding interest in de Jong, could also enter the race. The Red Devils had previously engaged in talks with Barcelona in 2022, but de Jong ultimately rejected a move to Old Trafford as he wanted to remain in Spain.

In an interview with NOS last year, de Jong revealed, “Manchester United already spoke with Barcelona despite the fact that I wanted to stay here. The club was in a difficult situation. They were able to sell me for a big fee, and they wanted to do this, but I did not want to leave, so I stayed.”

De Jong expressed his desire to stay in Barcelona for as long as possible, aiming to win the Nations League with the Netherlands as the next target after winning the league title.
