Fulham's Mitrovic & Silva face lengthy bans after FA charge

On Monday, the English Football Association charged Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic and head coach Marco Silva with misconduct after the two were involved in a chaotic clash that took place during Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester United.

According to the FA’s statement, Mitrovic is likely to face a lengthy ban for his part in the incident which saw him shove referee Chris Kavanagh with his shoulder as well as engage in “insulting and threatening” behaviour after he was shown red card.

The governing body also charged Silva with “abusive and/or insulting words, and/or gestures and/or behaviours towards the fourth official prior to his dismissal” as well as throwing a water bottle in the direction of an assistant referee.

Apart from facing possible sanctions, Fulham will also lose their 12-goal top performer for most, or all, of their Premier League run-in.

The club currently sits ninth on the league table and is hopeful of achieving European qualification.

Given past precedent such as when Paolo Di Canio was given an 11-game ban for pushing Paul Alcock during a match back in 1998, it can be expected that Mitrovic won’t get so lucky when it comes to his punishment by the FA.
