Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, has praised the recent election of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, as the new head of the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Zone B.
According to This Day, the election positions Gusau at the helm of the CAF sub-regional body overseeing football administration for Nigeria, Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Niger, and Togo. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) established regional zones like WAFU B to manage football more effectively across the continent.
Elegbeleye noted that Gusau’s election reflects a shift in football leadership within the region. “The NPFL Board receives the assumption of our Federation President, Alhaji Gusau to the leadership of the WAFU B Board and wish him and the new executives a successful tenure. This development is a very significant indication of the growing influence of Nigeria in football administration in the region and indeed in Africa,” he said.
Gusau becomes the fifth Nigerian to lead WAFU at a senior level, joining a distinguished list that includes the late Joseph Kwamina Tandoh—former vice-chairman of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA)—as well as Jonathan Boytie Ogufere (1988–1994), Abdulmumini Aminu (1999–2002), and Amos Adamu (2008–2010). During Adamu’s tenure, WAFU was divided into Zones A and B to improve administrative efficiency.
Gusau’s appointment is seen as a key development for Nigerian football, strengthening its voice and leadership role within African sports governance.
