Despite the controversy surrounding Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling and her past anti-trans comments, “Hogwarts Legacy,” a video game set in the Harry Potter universe released by Warner Bros. Games and available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a summer release planned for older-generation consoles as well as Nintendo Switch, has seen huge success commercially since its release.
With advanced copies allowing some players early access this week if they bought the Deluxe Edition, presales of the game were already topping charts-a trend which only continued once the game became available for purchase on Friday, where it hit the No. 1 spot on Steam and the PlayStation Store.
Professional critics had largely positive reviews for “Hogwarts Legacy”, with an 85 out of 100 Metacritic scores based on over 900 user reviews from around the world, while users themselves have given it a 9.1 out of 10 ratings according to Metacritic as well.
It is unclear if or how much Rowling would be compensated for the game despite her immense control over the content in the Harry Potter franchise; when asked, Warner Bros. Games did not respond to requests for comment.
