Reports have circulated that Godwin Emefiele, the Central Bank Governor, has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.
However, the DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, has yet to confirm or deny these rumours.
Emefiele’s suspension is part of a plan for reforms in the financial sector and to allow for an investigation into his actions, although the reason and timeframe for the investigation have not been stated.
In February 2023, the DSS had accused Emefiele of financing terrorism, but attempts to arrest him were resisted.
Afunanya stated that he is currently unable to confirm Emefiele’s arrest.
He said, “Inundated. I may not be able to make any confirmations NOW, please.”
