The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has recently announced that a State of Origin Certificate is now a compulsory requirement for passport renewal and fresh applications. This information was made public through a post on the NIS official handle on Saturday morning.
Obtaining the State of Origin Certificate
Passport applicants no longer need to travel to their states of origin to obtain the “indigenship document.” The NIS has stated that most states have liaison offices in other states, such as Anambra State having offices in Lagos (Eti-Osa) and Abuja (Asokoro). These liaison offices are empowered to issue the State of Origin Certificates.
Importance of the State of Origin Certificate
The NIS emphasized that every document required from passport applicants has been carefully considered and approved by the federal government through the Ministry of Interior. The State of Origin Certificate is essential in proving an individual’s Nigerian citizenship and ties them to a specific local government or indigenous area within the country.
It is important for passport applicants to familiarize themselves with the relevant section of the Nigerian constitution that pertains to citizenship.
Requirements for Passport Application
The basic requirements for first-time passport applicants include a completed passport application form, a recent passport-style photograph, a copy of the National Identification Number (NIN), a copy of the applicant’s birth certificate, a letter of consent from parents or guardians, and payment of a ₦5,000 passport application fee.
For passport renewal applicants, the requirements include a completed passport application form, a recent passport-style photograph, a copy of the old passport, and payment of a ₦2,000 passport application fee.
