The United Kingdom government has issued an apology to Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential Candidate, after immigration officials wrongly detained him for several alleged financial crimes.

The officials later found out that Obi was being impersonated and apologized for the “completely unacceptable” treatment he received.

According to a statement released by the Head of Obi-Datti Media Office, Diran Onifade, Obi was unlawfully detained and interrogated for hours by immigration officials at Heathrow Airport in London on April 7, 2023.

The statement revealed that the former Governor of Anambra State was wrongly detained over offences allegedly committed by an impostor who is still at large.

The Obi-Datti media office expressed concern that the impersonator of Obi may commit various crimes that could lead to the arrest of the Labour Party flagbearer in the United Kingdom for duplication.

The statement further disclosed that Obi was only released after Nigerians at Heathrow Airport protested against his detention.

The incident sparked outrage among Nigerians in the diaspora, who took to social media to demand justice for Obi.

The British government, through its immigration officials, admitted their mistake and issued a personal apology to Obi.

The officials described their actions as “appalling” and acknowledged that they were sorry for what happened.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of Nigerians in the diaspora and the need for proper identification protocols to prevent impersonation.

It has also brought to light the issue of racial profiling and discrimination that some immigrants face while travelling or living in foreign countries.
