The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has accused the Imo State Government of using armed thugs and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to disrupt the conduct of its elections in the state and declared an indefinite industrial action.
Joe Ajaero, the NLC president stated this in a statement on Tuesday saying that his team had been deployed to various states to act as returning officers for the election which was billed for last Tuesday.
He claimed that Imo State Government wanted to influence the outcome of the elections by offering gratifications so as to get their chosen candidates voted into power, but this was rejected by delegates.
He went further to say that when it became obvious that delegates would overwhelmingly vote against their chosen candidates, they were met with violence carried out by “thugs who were armed to the teeth” inflicting injuries also chasing away delegates and carting away materials meant for conducting elections.
Mr Ajaero further said security agents led by police and State Investigative Bureau invaded the venue continuing with the acts of violence on unarmed Nigerian workers.
