The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed it submitted eight key proposals to the National Assembly, aimed at updating Nigeria’s Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to THEWILL, these recommendations come from INEC’s internal review of the 2023 elections, which produced 142 points in total. The eight submitted proposals require changes to either the constitution or electoral laws.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this after the swearing-in of two new INEC Commissioners at the State House. He stated that the Commission has been working closely with members of the Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives to ensure timely legislative action.

Yakubu explained that a public hearing will be held before a new bill is finalized and sent to President Bola Tinubu for approval. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far.

“We are happy with our discussions with them and the speed with which they want to process [the recommendations], so that we have some necessary amendments done to the Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 general elections,” Yakubu said.

He also addressed recent rumors about his removal, stating clearly that he remains the Chief Electoral Commissioner and the returning officer for presidential elections, as mandated by the constitution.
