Lagos and Oyo States have confirmed Wednesday, August 20, 2025, as a work-free day to mark the annual Isese Day celebration — www.naijnaira.com reports.
According to a circular released in Oyo, Governor Seyi Makinde granted approval for the holiday, urging citizens to dedicate the day to prayers for unity, peace, and stability across the state and Nigeria.
In Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the observance is more than a holiday, describing it as a moment for reflection and cultural preservation.
“Isese Day is a time to reflect on our rich heritage and values as Lagosians,” the governor said, adding that the holiday strengthens harmony among diverse communities.
The celebration is dedicated to honoring Yoruba traditional religion, ancestral legacies, and indigenous spirituality through festivals, communal gatherings, and visits to sacred sites.
Traditional rulers, including the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, praised the recognition of Isese Day, noting that it reinforces Yoruba identity and spirituality in a modern world.
The event has grown into a major cultural fixture across the Southwest, with both states encouraging peaceful observance and respect for all faiths during the festivities.
