The incoming governor of Kano state, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced plans to review the dethronement of Muhammad Sanusi II as emir of Kano.

Sanusi, who was the 14th Emir of Kano, was removed from his position by outgoing Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in March 2020 and banished from Kano.

The expenses of the Kano emirate under Sanusi were also probed. The governor-elect has expressed his intention to revisit Sanusi’s dethronement if he wins the governorship.

Former governor of Kano State, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, has also hinted at the review of the dethronement.

Sanusi, an ex-central bank governor, was deposed for alleged “insubordination” to the Ganduje administration.

His fans believe he was sacked for opposing Ganduje’s re-election in 2019.

The Kano emirate, which has a significant influence on religion and tradition in Kano, was split into five by Ganduje, with the Emir of Kano serving as the chairman of the emirate council.

The governor-elect and his team will study the issues and decide on the way forward.
