Jurgen Klopp has provided an update on the fitness of Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez ahead of the side’s Champions League showdown with Real Madrid on Tuesday evening.

The Uruguayan forward had to be withdrawn from Saturday’s victory over Newcastle after sustaining a shoulder injury following a tackle with Magpies defender Kieran Trippier.

Klopp revealed at his post-match press conference that there was ‘bad news’ and that a further assessment was needed.

Ahead of the crucial first leg tie, he informed media on Monday afternoon that Nunez will train later in the day and that his pain levels would determine whether or not he is fit enough to play.

He also confirmed that Ibrahima Konate, Luis Diaz and Thiago Alcantara were unlikely to feature due to ongoing injury concerns but are expected back by mid-March.

Nunez will be highly motivated after finding recent goal scoring form prior to Saturday’s knock, having opened up Liverpool’s scoring at the St James’ Park before Cody Gakpo doubled their lead just 17 minutes into kick-off.
