The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dismissed claims that it recently held a national convention or inaugurated a new National Working Committee (NWC) in Lagos.
Speaking at the party’s headquarters in Abuja, NNPP National Chairman, Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, reaffirmed that the legitimate NWC was constituted in 2022 under the watch of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and remains the only recognized leadership.
“Our party has one headquarters, located in Abuja, as stipulated by law and acknowledged by INEC. The only legitimate NNPP logo features red and white colors with a book and academic cap at its center, alongside the slogan ‘Education for All.’ Any group masquerading under a different banner is nothing more than impostors,” Ahmed declared.
Dismissing rumors of an alternative NNPP faction operating out of Lagos, Ahmed urged Nigerians to verify facts via INEC’s official records. “We did not hold a convention in any hotel lobby in Lagos. Dr. Agbo Major is not our chairman, and he never was,” he asserted.
Ahmed further detailed how some NNPP members, found guilty of anti-party activities post-2023 elections, were subjected to disciplinary measures. Rather than seeking internal conflict resolution mechanisms, these individuals allegedly resorted to legal theatrics, filing and repeatedly losing cases in courts across Abuja, Ekiti, Port Harcourt, Awka, Kano, and Katsina.
“They even dragged themselves to an Abia court under the pretense of representing NNPP. However, as far back as April 18, 2024, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that these expelled members had no legal standing to act or speak on behalf of NNPP,” Ahmed emphasized.
Despite multiple court rulings invalidating their claims, the expelled group went ahead with an unauthorized national convention, electing a parallel NWC in what Ahmed described as a “kangaroo exercise.”
“For clarity, on January 16, 2025, the FCT High Court issued a restraining order barring them from engaging in any official NNPP activity. They received and acknowledged the order, yet chose to brazenly disregard it. On February 7, 2025, we appeared in court once again, where INEC denied any knowledge of their so-called convention in Apapa,” Ahmed added.
