The Labour Party’s National Executive Council (NEC), led by National Chairman Julius Abure, met on Monday at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
According to Vanguard News, the NEC warned Peter Obi, the party’s former presidential candidate, not to undermine the party’s peace, unity, and integrity.
The council made it clear that it would impose “stiffer penalty” if Obi participated in any actions that could harm the party.
During the meeting, the NEC reviewed Honourable Victor Adam Ogene’s performance as leader of the Labour Party’s House of Representatives Caucus.
The NEC expressed concerns about the leadership’s failure to represent the party properly in the House.
The council also noted that the party’s ideology and programs were not adequately reflected, and that the current leadership appeared compromised.
As a result, the NEC removed Ogene from his leadership role, citing “dereliction of duty.”
Honourable Barrister Ben Etanabene will replace Ogene as the new Caucus Leader for the Labour Party in the House of Representatives.
The NEC instructed the National Working Committee (NWC) to notify the relevant authorities about this change.
Etanabene will immediately take control of all party properties, including financial contributions from other Labour Party lawmakers.
The NEC also warned that it would take all necessary measures to retrieve party assets, including funds Ogene reportedly holds.
The NEC reassured Nigerians of the Labour Party’s commitment to good governance, security, and economic growth.
The party also emphasized its focus on providing a free and independent judiciary and a robust electoral system if given the mandate.
The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of the party’s dedication to internal democracy and a strong political ideology.
