The Lagos State Government has issued a warning to filling station managers in Lagos, Nigeria, to stop charging extra fees for transactions made through Point of Sale (PoS) machines.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), Mr. Afolabi Solebo, stated that such charges are in violation of consumer rights and constitute unfair trade practices.
The government has received numerous complaints from consumers about illegal charges by some business outlets, particularly filling stations.
Mr. Solebo urged motorists and consumers to report any violations to the agency, and assured that appropriate action would be taken against violators.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) also expressed concerns about attempts to fix prices for PoS services, stating that while individual operators can increase prices as they see fit, creating a cartel to fix prices is not allowed.
The FCCPC emphasized the use of advocacy and business education to promote compliance with the law, but also stated that penalties would be imposed when necessary.
