During a recent session, the House of Representatives in Nigeria considered a motion to ban young Nigerians from leaving the country, known as the ‘Japa’ syndrome.

The motion was presented by Rep. Philip Agbese, who argued that the growing number of young Nigerians emigrating to countries such as the UK, USA, and Canada posed a significant threat to the country’s economy, intellectual capacity, and social fabric.

However, when the motion was put to a vote, it was unanimously rejected by the lawmakers.

Despite concerns about brain drain and the loss of talent, it appears that the Nigerian government is not yet ready to take drastic measures to prevent young people from seeking opportunities abroad.
