Barcelona has secured the transfer of Manchester City’s captain, Ilkay Gundogan, after his seven-year stint with the Premier League champions.
Gundogan was Pep Guardiola’s first signing for the Etihad and went on to score 60 goals in 304 appearances for the club.
His vision, technique, and goal-scoring abilities made him a pivotal figure in Guardiola’s squad, and he was appointed captain by his City peers at the start of the 2022/23 campaign.
Gundogan’s final game for the club saw him lead them to Champions League glory in Istanbul against Inter, securing a historic Treble of Premier League, FA Cup, and European Cup for City.
The club statement praised Gundogan’s humble and understated demeanor off the field and his exceptional leadership on it.
A club statement read: “Humble and understated off the field, on it his vision and technique – allied to a fine eye for goal – established him as a pivotal figure in Guardiola’s squad.
“Appointed captain by his City peers at the outset of the 2022/23 campaign, Gundogan’s final game for the Club saw him captain us to Champions League glory in Istanbul against Inter earlier this month.
“A famous 1-0 win in Turkey saw City crowned champions of Europe for the first time and so secure a historic Treble of Premier League, FA Cup and European Cup, with Ilkay leading the Club to a special place in the record books.”
