Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has named the nine Premier League teams that attempted three years ago to get them kicked out of the Champions League.

Speaking ahead of City’s game, Guardiola referred to a similar incident in February 2020 which saw City banned from European competitions for two years by UEFA after it was claimed that false sponsorship agreements had been used to boost revenues.

However, this ban was overturned when an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) revealed “insufficient evidence” and that nine top-flight English clubs – Arsenal, Burnley, Chelsea, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle, Tottenham and Wolves – had sent letters demanding the punishment be upheld.

Guardiola stressed he would “never forget” their part in trying to take away from his team European football glory and vowed he would remain at his current post more than ever before despite speculation of his departure.
