Manchester United are on the hunt for a new No 7, with the iconic shirt having been vacated by Cristiano Ronaldo following his shock departure back in November.

It was expected that Ronaldo would remain until the end of the season despite his struggles since Erik ten Hag’s appointment as manager.

However, after a critical interview he gave to Piers Morgan about life at the club, United had no choice but to part ways.

Now they’re looking to significantly strengthen their attack to try and return to the Champions League, with Joao Felix and Memphis Depay among those reportedly being eyed up by those at Old Trafford.

Wout Weghorst is also of interest following his strong form for Besiktas over recent months.

With Felix and Depay having significant links to the No 7 shirt already, either player may be set to don it following any potential transfer this month.

Felix wanted that number at Atletico Madrid three-and-a-half years ago when he swapped Benfica for Spain and admitted: “I wanted No 79 but they didn’t let me here.” He eventually went with seven.

Ronaldo has now departed Old Trafford amid comments by former United striker Dwight Yorke that he felt unhappy at not seeing the club progressing how he wanted it too, resulting in him making certain demands of Ten Hag upon his arrival which weren’t met – ‘a ticking time bomb just ready to explode’, according to Yorke.
