After confirming his departure from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Kylian Mbappe is reportedly set to take a pay-cut as he prepares to join Real Madrid.
The French captain has long been linked with a move to the Bernabeu and last summer, he refused to sign a new deal with PSG, allowing him to become a free agent.
Mbappe has remained tight-lipped about his future destination, choosing to focus on the current season before making any announcements.
Mbappe will play his final match in PSG colors on home turf against Toulouse on Saturday, followed by the last match of the season against Nice next Wednesday.
With his move away from the French capital, Mbappe will experience a significant change in his circumstances, as he turns his back on his blockbuster deal with the Ligue 1 champions.
According to reports, Mbappe’s salary at Real Madrid will be drastically reduced to align with the club’s highest-earners.
Despite the reduction, his proposed salary will still dwarf the wages of the most senior members of the team.
Previously earning an eye-popping £62 million (€72 million) per year at PSG, his new deal is estimated to be around £21 million (€25 million) per year after tax.
Mbappe’s new salary will make him the highest earner at Real Madrid, surpassing the wages of current top earners David Alaba and Toni Kroos.
The announcement of his departure was accompanied by a heartfelt message in which he thanked the club, his teammates, the supporters, and his managers throughout his time in Paris.
In his farewell statement, Mbappe did not mention PSG’s president Nasser Al-Khelaifi or former sporting director Antero Henrique.
Reports suggest that Mbappe’s relationship with Al-Khelaifi has been strained, with no communication between them since February.
The frosty relationship has led to the pair avoiding each other to prevent any forced interactions.
Fans will have the opportunity to bid farewell to Mbappe in person, with a tifo honoring the club’s Ligue 1 success this season and a planned lap of honor for Mbappe to express his gratitude to the supporters.
