In the aftermath of Spain’s victory at Euro 2024, a video went viral on social media showing Spain stars Alvaro Morata and Rodri participating in a controversial chant.
Captured during their victory parade in Madrid’s Cibeles Square, Spain captain Morata declared, “It’s Spanish, Gibraltar is Spanish”.
Rodri then took the microphone and joined in the chant. Gibraltar, a British territory since 1713, has frequently rejected falling under Spanish sovereignty. ‘
The chant sparked outrage in Gibraltar, leading to UEFA’s intervention.
The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) has handed down one-match bans to both Morata and Rodri.
The CEDB concluded that the players were guilty of failing to comply with the general principles of conduct.
They violated the basic rules of decent conduct by using sporting events for non-sporting manifestations, thereby bringing disrepute to the sport of football and UEFA.
The incident has drawn sharp responses, particularly from Gibraltar. The Gibraltar FA lodged a formal complaint, describing the chants as “extremely provocative and insulting”.
Tens of thousands of Spanish fans were present in Cibeles Square during the celebration, intensifying the impact of the chants.
Spain’s government has yet to respond to UEFA’s decision.
Historically, Spain has maintained a claim over Gibraltar, asserting that the continued British occupation does not meet international law’s requirements for sovereignty acquisition.
On its official website, Spain’s foreign ministry stresses that the occupation is illegal and has repeatedly called for negotiations with the United Kingdom for Gibraltar’s return.
