The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has made an appeal to the abductors of its former president, Okey Wali (SAN), to release him without harm.

This comes after gunmen kidnapped Wali and shot dead two of his aides in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The kidnappers were reportedly wearing military camouflage and carried out the act around 3pm on Monday.

They had trailed the SAN and his escorts for a while before launching their attack around Obiri-Ikwerre interchange in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

In addition to the deaths of his two aides, a personal driver and aide, the policemen escorting them also sustained injuries.

On Tuesday, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau (SAN) made a plea in a statement for Wali to be immediately released unharmed.

He highlighted Wali’s contributions to the legal profession and society, calling him a philanthropist who has helped in the development of his community.

“Mr. Okey Wali, SAN was the 26th president of the NBA and has served this nation in varying capacities, contributing immensely to the growth of the legal practice and in the promotion and entrenchment of the rule of law.”

Maikyau’s statement also expressed solidarity with Wali’s family and decried the security situation in Nigeria, which he describes as “a sad reminder of the weakness in our security system and the failure of successive governments to live up to the Constitutional duty of providing for the welfare and security of all Nigerians.”

Wali, a respected figure in the legal profession, has served Nigeria in various capacities, including as the attorney general and commissioner for justice in Rivers State.
