The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has recently sanctioned 25 stations for breaching the Nigeria Broadcasting Code during the February 25th presidential and National Assembly elections.

According to Balarabe Ilelah, Director-General of NBC, some of these stations had allowed their platforms to be used for inflammatory political discussions which could have posed a risk to the stability of the nation.

In addition to serving warning letters to 16 other stations, NBC said 17 were sanctioned for broadcasting partisan content within 24 hours prior to the election, one station was punished for announcing election results before authorised returning officers had made them public, and three others received sanctions for inciting remarks.

All broadcasters are now being cautioned against violating the code when it comes time for the upcoming gubernatorial and Houses of Assembly elections on March 18th.
