The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has recently introduced a new numbering format for fixed lines in Nigeria.

Under this new arrangement, fixed-line numbers will now consist of 10 digits, with the addition of the prefix “02” before the existing fixed number.

This change is in line with the NCC’s responsibilities under the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 to manage the nation’s numbering resources.

Existing numbers will continue to operate alongside the new format until December 31, 2023.

From January 1, 2024, the new numbering format will be fully operational. It is important to note that this change only applies to fixed telephone numbers and does not affect the existing mobile numbering format.

The NCC’s announcement aligns with the practices of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations body overseeing Information Communication Technologies (ICT).
