Nigerian citizens applying for US non-immigrant visas will now receive single-entry visas valid for just three months, NaijNaira can report.
According to a statement from the US embassy in Abuja, as published by travel.state.gov, the policy change stems from a global review of visa reciprocity terms.
Before this change, eligible Nigerian travelers could secure visas lasting up to five years. Existing valid visas remain unchanged and can still be used.
“The United States Department of State has announced updates to its reciprocal non-immigrant visa policy, impacting several countries, including Nigeria,” the embassy said.
It emphasized that the revised rule aligns with standard global practices, subject to periodic review depending on each country’s compliance with US criteria.
The criteria include secure travel documentation, effective overstay control, and reliable information-sharing systems on criminal records and public safety.
“The United States values its longstanding relationship with Nigeria and remains committed to expanding our partnership,” the embassy added.
Former diplomats like Prof. Alaba Ogunsanwo say, “These decisions are taken in the best interest of the country making the statements.”
Prof. Kayode Soremekun noted, “This policy ignores Nigeria’s vital contributions to sectors like US healthcare and technology.”
The embassy urged Nigerian travelers to maintain valid documents and follow all visa terms closely.
