Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier has announced his retirement from England duty.
Trippier earned 54 caps over seven years and played in four major tournaments, including England’s runs to two Euro finals and the 2018 World Cup semi-final, where he famously scored a free-kick against Croatia.
Trippier expressed his gratitude and reflection on social media, writing, “I never thought as a young lad from Bury that I would play for my country, let alone achieve 54 caps. It’s been one of the biggest honours of my life to represent my country at 4 major tournaments.”
His retirement comes just before interim manager Lee Carsley announces his first squad.
Tino Livramento, who recently replaced Trippier in the Newcastle starting lineup, is being considered for a senior call-up.
Other potential candidates include Manchester City’s Rico Lewis, while Arsenal‘s Ben White, who previously made himself unavailable under Southgate, is not expected to be included.
Trippier’s final England appearance was in the Euro 2024 semi-final victory over the Netherlands, with Luke Shaw taking his place in the final defeat to Spain.
Interim manager Lee Carsley has been assigned the role temporarily following Gareth Southgate’s departure.
Carsley is expected to lead the team for the upcoming Nations League games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September.
