The Nigerian government has unveiled a plan to repatriate around 15,000 nationals currently stranded in countries such as Cameroon, Niger, Chad, and others.

According to a report, the federal commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Tijani Ahmed, made the announcement during a briefing on Friday.

The move is aimed at assisting Nigerian citizens who wish to return voluntarily following periods of hardship, displacement, or instability. The federal commissioner emphasized that the process will prioritize the welfare and dignity of those involved.

“We have 15,000 Nigerians who want to return to the country voluntarily; we also have not less than 100,000 foreigners living in this country as refugees. All these are the responsibilities of the commission, to give them support,” Ahmed said.

The initiative comes as Nigeria continues to deal with internal displacement affecting over six million individuals. Authorities say the repatriation plan is one of several steps being taken to manage the broader challenges related to migration and humanitarian support.
