The Nigerian Army has launched fresh combat competitions across its divisions to sharpen the fighting edge of its officers and soldiers — www.naijnaira.com reports.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the Inter-Brigade Combat Competition held by the 3 Division in Rukuba near Jos gathered several brigades for intensive drills.

Major General Folunsho Oyinlola, the Division’s commander and also head of Operation Safe Haven, stressed that training remains the foundation of combat effectiveness.

“This competition is part of training, which is the cardinal pillar of this division. It is organised to further equip our officers to enhance their competencies and effectiveness in the discharge of their constitutional roles,” he said.

He explained that the contest strengthens middle and junior commanders, preparing them for modern warfare while aligning with the Chief of Army Staff’s vision of a motivated, combat-ready force.

Brigadier General Adiyu Aminu, the Division’s garrison commander, described the event as timely, urging participants to display discipline and true sportsmanship.

Troops from 6 Brigade Jalingo, 23 Brigade Yola, 33 Artillery Brigade Bauchi, 3 Division Garrison Jos, and 43 Engineers Brigade Jos are all taking part.

In Abuja, a separate Guards Brigade contest opened at the Scorpion Officers’ Mess under the watch of Major General Muhammed Takuti Usman from the Department of Army Transformation and Innovation.

General Usman emphasized that training during peacetime is non-negotiable, saying, “In the face of evolving security challenges, training is not just an activity—it is an imperative.”

Brigadier General Adebisi Olusegun Onasanya, Guards Brigade Commander, added that the contest builds endurance, leadership, discipline, and esprit de corps among personnel.

Events include shooting drills, skill-at-arms, a 15km combat run, obstacle courses, map reading, and combat swimming, all tailored to test resilience and operational readiness.

The competitions underline the Army’s broader plan to raise battle-ready leaders who can confront emerging threats with strength, discipline, and professionalism.
