Nigerian singer Tems, also known as Temilade Openiyi, was recognized at the 23rd BET Awards held in Los Angeles.
Despite losing two out of three nominations, Tems won the “Best Collaboration” award for her contribution to Future’s “Wait For U,” which also features Canadian rapper Drake.
This song previously won the “Best Melodic Rap Performance” at the 2023 Grammys and debuted at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
This is the second major award for the song. Tems was also nominated for “Best Female R&B/Pop Artist” and “Viewer’s Choice,” but lost to SZA and Beyoncé, respectively.
Burna Boy, another Nigerian artist, lost in the “Best Male R&B/Pop Artist” and “Best Video Director” categories but won the “Best International Act” award for the fourth time.
Beyoncé and SZA both won three awards each, tying for the most wins at the 2023 BET Awards.
