Paul Onuachu’s return to Trabzonspor has been hit with a setback after the striker picked up an ankle injury during a pre-season clash, NaijNaira can report.
The Nigerian forward, who recently sealed a permanent switch from Southampton, may be ruled out for up to a month.
According to AbcGazetesi, the injury occurred during a friendly match against Azerbaijani side Araz Nakhchivan.
Medical scans revealed intense swelling and a partial ligament tear in Onuachu’s left ankle.
Trabzonspor’s health board chairman, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Beşir, explained: “Due to the impact, intense edema was detected in Onuachu’s left ankle bones and partial injury to his ankle ligaments.”
He confirmed that treatment has already started and the striker will be closely monitored.
Fans had looked forward to his full-time return after a solid loan spell last season where he impressed in front of goal.
His absence will likely affect Trabzonspor’s attacking options going into their season opener against Kocaelispor on August 11.
Onuachu also faces missing further Super Lig games against Kasimpasa, Antalyaspor, and Samsunspor.
Despite reported interest from European clubs like Rennes, the 30-year-old chose to return to the Black Sea club.
The hope within the squad is for his speedy recovery as the season draws near.
