The Nigeria Immigration Service has moved from producing just 300 passports a day to delivering up to 5,000 daily after activating a new Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre in Abuja – www.naijnaira.com reports.
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo revealed this breakthrough while touring the freshly commissioned facility at the agency’s headquarters, according to Punch.
For decades, the immigration service relied on old machines that dragged production, turning out fewer than 300 passports daily, often causing long delays for applicants.
With the new central hub, passports are now processed in bulk, completing between 4,500 and 5,000 daily within four to five hours of operation.
“This is a game-changer for passport processing in Nigeria,” Tunji-Ojo declared, stressing that the government’s pledge of two-week delivery was shrinking to a single week.
He explained that the reform was the first time in Nigeria’s history since 1963 that passport production had been centralised, aligning the country with global best practices.
According to him, centralisation ensures consistency, speeds up issuance, and gives Nigerian passports stronger credibility abroad.
The minister emphasised that the upgrade reflects President Bola Tinubu’s broader agenda to improve service delivery and restore public trust in national institutions.
“This development is about driving efficiency and building a passport system Nigerians can be proud of,” Tunji-Ojo added.
