Northern Democrats React to NNPCL Management Changes

The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has raised serious concerns about the recent changes at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

According to Leadership News, the group finds these appointments troubling, suggesting that they reflect ethnic marginalization. The LND worries that this could breed corruption and favoritism, with one ethnic group dominating key positions in government.

The appointment of Bayo Ojulari as the new Group CEO and Musa Ahmadu-Kida as non-executive chairman, following the removal of Mele Kyari, has sparked the debate. The group believes this shift risks marginalizing other ethnic groups.

The LND pointed out that when a single ethnic group takes control of critical government roles, it can create an impression of unfairness. “When one ethnic group monopolizes government positions, it risks marginalising other groups,” they said.

This perception of favoritism, according to the group, could stir up ethnic tensions and undermine the unity of the nation.

Another concern raised by the LND is the risk of corruption. They argued that a homogeneous selection process might create an environment where nepotism thrives, which could lead to the prioritization of ethnic interests over national well-being.

The group also cautioned that the imbalance in appointments could affect the fair distribution of resources, potentially deepening economic disparities and creating resentment among marginalized groups.

In their statement, the LND emphasized that this situation could go against the federal character principle, which ensures that Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups are fairly represented in government.

They called on the government to reconsider the current appointments and adopt a more inclusive approach in the future, one that fairly represents all ethnic and political groups in Nigeria.
