A man who is believed to have fathered over 550 children has been banned from donating his sperm by a Dutch court.
The man, identified as Jonathan M., had misled prospective parents about the number of offspring he had helped to conceive and had provided sperm to several Dutch fertility clinics, as well as a clinic in Denmark and many other people he connected with through advertisements and online forums.
The court noted that Dutch guidelines allow sperm donors to produce a maximum of 25 children with 12 mothers, and that the donor had lied about his donation history.
The injunction was brought by the mother of a child conceived with the donor’s sperm and a foundation representing other parents.
The court’s decision was welcomed by the mother, who expressed hope that it would lead to a ban on mass donation and protect children from injustice.
