North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for the expansion of the country’s military capabilities and reviewed plans against neighboring South Korea.

In a meeting of the central military commission of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, Kim emphasized the need for “more practical and offensive” war deterrence measures in response to the “ever-worsening security on the Korean Peninsula.”

The U.S. and South Korean militaries recently conducted joint military exercises, which North Korea condemned as preparations for an invasion.

In response, North Korea conducted a series of weapon tests, including trial runs of its Haeil underwater nuclear attack drone and the unveiling of new, smaller Hwasan-31 tactical nuclear warheads.

Amid growing tensions, North Korea has not responded to routine calls from the South through an inter-Korean liaison channel for five straight days.

The South has expressed strong regret over North Korea’s unilateral and irresponsible attitude and warned that it will eventually isolate and put itself in a predicament.
