It is the dream of every NPFL striker’s to add a Golden Boot to their cabinet at the end of the season, as such these players have had an amazing run in the league for the 2022-23 abridged season.

Last season in the NPFL it was Silas Nwankwo of Nasarawa United who won the Golden Boot with a total of 19-goals at the end of the campaign.

So with the 2022-23 abridged season done and dusted on the home-front, who is the highest goal-scorer for this year?

Chukwuemeka Obioma – (14, Enyimba)

Obioma’s hunger and thirst for goals is without doubt one of the reasons the Aba Elephant are playing in the NPFL Super Six, having started the season poorly in terms of on-field performances.

The Enyimba forward finished the NPFL season with 14-goals after scoring an hat-trick in the Elephant rout of Gombe United, which confirmed them as of the team that will be participating in the Super Six.

Obioma wasn’t just known for his ruthlessness in-front of goal for Enyimba this season, he also makes sure he supports the team with his pace, power and leadership skill.

Robert Mizo – (9, Bayelsa United)

Bayelsa United’s prolific forward Robert Mizo netted nine times in the Nigeria Premier Football League for the Yenagoa-based club this season.

Though Mizo’s goals couldn’t help his team qualify for the NPFL Super Six which commenced few weeks ago, however, he gave account of himself as one of the best centre-forward in the league this season.

While the league was still on, Mizo revealed that helping his team maintain their Premier League status is more important to him than the highest goal-scorer award, thankfully they were able to secure their place in the league ahead of next season.

Imade Osarenkhoe – (8, Bendel Insurance)

Bendel Insurance forward, Imade Osarenkhoe, finished the abridged NPFL campaign with 8-goals and also won the Player of the Month award for January having hit the ground running in the first stanza.

Insurance got promoted to the NPFL last season, but surprisingly finished the campaign as the winner of Group A and securing a spot in the Super Six playoffs.

With the playoffs set to come to an end on Sunday Insurance and Osarenkhoe would be hoping to qualify for the continent when they take Remo Stars tomorrow

Cyril Olisema – (6, Akwa United)

This time last season Akwa United were already declared the Champions of the 2021-22 NPFL season, but this year the Promise Keepers couldn’t replicate their title winning form in the just concluded abridged format.

While Akwa United couldn’t finish top in their group and also secure a spot in the Super Six playoffs, the Promise Keepers midfielder Olisema finished high among the best goal-scorers in the league with 6-goals.

With the new NPL season set to commence sometime in August, fans favorite Olisema would hope to push his team farther in their quest to win the league and qualify for the continent.

Usman Musa – (6, Doma United)

If there’s any team that shone-out a steeler and surprising performance in the just concluded NPFL season, it is Doma United despite just been promoted to the topflight from the Nigeria National League (NNL).

Painfully Doma couldn’t fight till the end in their quest to feature in the Super Six during the last game of the season, however, we need to commend the form and hunger of Musa who finished among the NPFL top-scorers with 6-goals.

If Usman Musa, perhaps stays with Doma United going forward into the new campaign, he could replicate his form with the team next season but for now he deserves every encomium he can get now.
