Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has announced that corps members serving in the state will now receive N20,000 monthly, earning him praise from the NYSC boss — www.naijnaira.com reports.
The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, made the commendation during a courtesy visit to the Government House, Enugu.
According to The Whistler, Nafiu lauded Mbah’s decision to improve corps members’ welfare while also thanking him for reconstructing the NYSC permanent orientation camp at Awgu.
He described Enugu as a peaceful environment where many corps members had chosen to stay even after completing their service year.
The DG revealed that 11,116 Enugu indigenes are serving across Nigeria, while 5,636 are deployed within the state.
Nafiu emphasized that “the scheme instills discipline in Nigerian youths,” disclosing that 131 corps members had their service year extended for misconduct.
He urged corps members to respect the culture and values of their host communities to promote integration and unity.
Governor Mbah assured his guest that the Awgu camp, Nigeria’s first NYSC orientation site established in 1973, would be completed before the end of 2025.
He stressed the symbolic importance of Awgu, calling it “a centre where we talked about Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Reconciliation after the Civil War.”
The governor noted that corps members were vital to state development, adding, “Some work in hospitals, teach in schools, and contribute to our growth.”
Mbah also highlighted special allowances for corps doctors and nurses, who currently earn N80,000 and N40,000 respectively, with N20,000 for others to follow.
A plaque of honour was presented to Governor Mbah by the NYSC DG in recognition of his support for the scheme.
