Segun Sowunmi, a senior figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has encouraged Peter Obi to rejoin the party ahead of the 2027 presidential race, stating it would improve his chances significantly.

According to Guardian Nigeria, Sowunmi made this call during an interview on the ‘Mic On Podcast’ hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, suggesting that Obi needs “a bigger platform” to succeed in the next election.

Sowunmi believes the PDP will provide a level playing field when it opens its presidential nomination process. He urged Obi to consider returning and positioning himself for the ticket, pointing to the party’s history and roots in the South East.

“If his numbers and the animated energy that is following him were to follow him into the PDP and he is the presidential candidate, I can guarantee you he would take the South East, South South, the Christian North and North Central,” Sowunmi said.

He referenced Obi’s strong showing in the 2023 election, where he secured over six million votes without traditional support from state governors or party structures. He argued that with proper grassroots backing, Obi could significantly outperform that result.

Despite leaving the PDP in 2022 over concerns about internal dynamics, Obi’s return, Sowunmi said, could lead to a united front that includes the South East, Southern leaders, and influential PDP figures ready to support a strong candidate.

Meanwhile, APC Senator Yemi Adaramodu downplayed efforts by opposition figures to build a coalition against President Bola Tinubu, dismissing them as “content creators.” Speaking in Ekiti State, he maintained that Tinubu’s policies have begun yielding positive results.

Adaramodu expressed confidence that the APC is not threatened by coalition talks involving prominent opposition leaders like Atiku Abubakar and Nasir el-Rufai. He reassured party members and supporters that Tinubu remains firmly on track for re-election.
