Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi recently met at the 11th Annual Cambridge Africa Together Conference in the United States.

The event, held at St. John’s College, University of Cambridge, brought together African leaders, thinkers, and changemakers, according to Daily Post Nigeria. El-Rufai was among the listed speakers at the conference.

While both figures belong to rival political factions—Obi having contested under the Labour Party and El-Rufai recently moving from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP)—their conversation at the event caught attention. El-Rufai is reportedly aligning politically with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is seeking to lead a united opposition front ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections.

Their appearance together has prompted discussion across political and social circles, as observers consider the possibility of emerging coalitions among opposition figures.

“We must begin to see each other beyond party lines if we are serious about progress,” one attendee at the conference quoted Peter Obi as saying.

Their meeting comes amid rising interest in the opposition’s strategy and internal dynamics ahead of the next general election.
