Obi’s Possible Exit from LP Sparks Opportunist Claims

Ayo Olorunfemi, deputy national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has cautioned Peter Obi against leaving the party, warning that such a move could damage his public image. He said Obi’s departure would be seen as proof that he used the party purely for electoral gain.

According to NAN, Olorunfemi shared these views during an interview in Lagos. Obi, who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to contest the 2023 presidential election under the LP, came third with over six million votes.

Talk of Obi returning to the PDP ahead of the 2027 election has been gaining traction. Segun Sowunmi, a PDP chieftain, recently suggested that Obi could perform better under the PDP due to its nationwide structure.

Olorunfemi believes Obi should focus on rebuilding the LP rather than jumping to another platform. He emphasized the importance of staying to resolve internal issues and strengthen the party from within.

“He should stay and resolve the crises he and others created in LP,” Olorunfemi said. “Moving around will portray him as an opportunistic politician, not different from these politicians jumping here and there.”

Obi’s next political decision will be closely watched, especially by those who supported his 2023 campaign. Whether he remains with the LP or chooses another path, the choice could affect his support base and influence in the next election.
