10 Years On Ooni Okunade Sijuwade to Be Honored with Cultural Events

A decade after the passing of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse II, the family of the late monarch has announced a series of commemorative events aimed at celebrating his influence in traditional leadership, diplomacy, and cultural preservation.

According to Tribune Online, the event lineup was unveiled during a press conference in Lagos, organized in collaboration with the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria. The programme has been titled “A Decade of Legacy” and will feature activities that reflect the values the Ooni stood for during his lifetime.

The schedule includes an Inter-School Debate Tour between three major cities: Lagos, Abeokuta, and Ile-Ife. Students from King’s College (Lagos), Abeokuta Grammar School (the Ooni’s alma mater), and Oduduwa College (Ile-Ife) will debate the topic: “Traditional Governance vs. Modern Democracy: Which Best Preserves Cultural Heritage?” The debate is set to conclude on July 25, 2025, with young participants discussing how cultural identity can be protected in a rapidly changing society.

Another major feature will be a Grand Memorial Exhibition curated by cultural historian Dr. Oludamola Adebowale. It will open rare access to personal effects, historic photographs, and archival materials from Nigeria, the UK, and the U.S. Institutions contributing to this exhibition include the National Archives of Nigeria, UK National Archives, Horniman Museum & Gardens (UK), African American Research Library and Cultural Centre in Florida, and the Sijuwade Personal Collection.

The final ceremonies will be held in Ile-Ife, beginning with a church thanksgiving service and concluding with solemn prayers at the mausoleum of the late monarch. These moments are planned to reflect both celebration and reverence, as the Ooni was known for his deep spirituality and diplomatic grace.

Representing the current Ooni of Ife at the press event, the Asoya of Isoya, Oba Muraina Adebanjo Adedini, offered the most resonant tribute of the day:
“Oba Sijuwade was not just a custodian of tradition but a bridge between past and future. His leadership united us, and his legacy must be carried forward with dignity and vision.”

Other attendees at the press conference included veteran journalist Chief Dele Momodu, who shared personal stories of his time serving in the late monarch’s household during the 1980s.

Preparations are already underway to welcome dignitaries, cultural figures, and members of the public for what promises to be a memorable series of events in honor of a man who left a lasting mark on Yoruba history.
